When I was a young girl, it was a treat to go to the store on Saturday afternoon. The best part of the trip was always the visit to at the candy counter at the “ten-cent store,” which was Kresge’s. The candy counter was a rectangular counter that we could walk around to see all of the bulk candy in the bins behind the glass. This was before the invention of digital scales ,but they were actuallyprice computing scales. The saleslady behind the candy counter would scoop out our choice of candy and drop it into the bowl on the scale. Then the needle would swing over to the weight of the candy. Under the weight was a total price for each per-pound price. The saleslady would then dump the candy into a small white paper bag and hand it to my mom.

These Saturday shopping trips would come in the late afternoon, after our mom washed my sister’s and my hair. She would dress us up in a cute little dress, and my dad would drive us to the shopping area. She loved for others to see us. Often, people in the store would comment on our shiny blonde hair, and she felt pride in having two darling daughters.

In the store, she would let us “go look at the toys.” Mom was very strict about us not touching the toys, but we still loved to go off by ourselves and see what we could see. To ensure we didn’t touch anything, she told us to keep our hands behind our backs. To this day, I find myself shopping with my hands behind my back, although now I touch everything. Just last year I was hired to produce a research report to find out the effectiveness of promotional items such as scout patches, patches and baseball trading pins. What was discovered is that there is a whole world of people just waiting to trade your promotional items at all types of venues.

Fairs, exhibitions, and conventions can be a good time for any business to promote or advertise its products. Most of the time organizers of these events encourage their participants to dress up their booths so that the entire event would not suffer for rah-rah and interest. There are certain times when the organizers come up with an overall theme for the event, and force the people presenting to dress up their booths according to the theme.

How does a company decide if a theme is necessary for its booth? Here are a few suggestions to companies in deciding the best theme for their booths in these trade shows.

Thinking of a good theme for the booth can begin by scanning the promotional items that the company has in storage. For example, if the company has excess promotional mugs in storage, then designing theseitems for a baseball theme can be a good idea. Dress up the items in order to complement the said theme. If there are excess promotional scout patches that are shaped like pigs, then having a farm or rodeo can be a fitting theme. While not all remaining freebies can be made into certain themes, don’t let them hinder you from thinking creatively. In fact black pens that were distributed in the past can be put into good use as long as they are decorated brightly in a storage box, and wrapped with a themed paper for good measure.

Functionality however must be stressed in coming up with themes for the booth. No matter how brilliant the concept may be, if they do not have a lasting impression on the audience, your booth will not be of significance to your target audience. For example having a 1960′s theme may appeal only to a significant portion of your audience. If you have a crowd that is very hip you may not be able to attract their attention because they have a vague idea on what the ’60s were all about.

So using giveaways that are highly useful like mouse mats, mugs, coasters, and letter openers is recommended. Do not give away useless items because they would probably end up in the trash. Keep in mind too that the promotional products you will give away do not have to correspond with the chosen theme.

We have people select a card and then, based on the number they draw, they get to pick an item from a bin. The bins are numbered with the most expensive items in low numbers and the least expensive items in the top numbers. The people walk by our booth, pick a number and then select a freebie from the bins.
